Nigerian superstar Tems has revealed the painful early struggles she faced on her journey to fame, including being booed off stage and pelted with plastic bottles.
In an interview with Big Boy TV, the Crazy Tings crooner recounted a school performance where she expected applause but instead faced humiliation.
“I remember one time I was going to perform at my school as an up-and-coming singer and I thought I was going to receive a standing ovation… but I got booed. They even threw plastic bottles at me,” Tems recalled.
She explained that many of the rejections she faced stemmed from her commitment to originality — refusing to rely on covers or popular sounds like many of her peers. Despite the setbacks, Tems stayed true to her style and artistic vision.
Looking back, the Grammy-winning singer expressed gratitude for persevering: staying authentic, she said, ultimately paved the way for the global success she enjoys today.
Her story has inspired young musicians across Nigeria, reminding them that early failures and criticism can be stepping stones to greatness when paired with determination and self-belief.
